    The 50th anniversary of Virginia's Kepone disaster is being marked, where workers for a small chemical company dumped the harmful pesticide into Hopewell's waterways. The run-off caused severe harm to workers and led to the closure of the James River to commercial fishing. The company responsible, Allied Chemical, was ordered to pay $13.2 million in a legal settlement, which created the Virginia Environmental Endowment. However, environmentalists and scientists worry about the possibility of another Kepone crisis due to the weakening of monitoring programs for the James River.
