3. Workplace trends remain fairly stable, and workers tend to stay in the same occupational area that they first enter.

4. Career preparation and continuing education include choices among a variety of programs, schools and colleges.

Virginia’s Career Planning System powered by KUDER is available to all 7th – 12th grade students and provides access to Internet-based career exploration and planning. The KUDER system is named after Dr. Frederick W. Kuder, an expert in assessment instruments and career planning. KUDER becomes your roadmap for life once you register and begin to build your career planning portfolio online. The system includes:

• Online lifelong career portfolio
• Research-based interests, skills, and work values assessments
• Education and career planning resources
• Access to job openings
• Develop Your Future teaching and learning modules

The career assessment inventories help guide you in a career exploration process. Each assessment has a special purpose:

• The Kuder Career Search with Person Match is an interest inventory. It helps you learn about your career interests and helps you apply your personal interests to your career plans.

• The Kuder Skills Assessment is a highly reliable self estimate of your ability to perform work-related tasks. The skills assessment results parallel the interest results by aligning skills with career clusters and promoting occupation selection with the greatest opportunity for satisfaction and success.

• Super’s Work Values Inventory was created by Dr. Donald Super, another assessment and career planning expert. This inventory assists in determining what workplace characteristics are important to you.

The combined results of the three assessments help you know yourself better and guide you in your career exploration process. The KUDER Career Portfolio provides you with a way to begin to build an education plan, to take assessments, and to explore post-secondary and occupational information. It also allows you to compare college profiles and occupations side by side, save information to a “favorites” list, access financial aid and scholarship information, build a professional résumé, and learn how to prepare for a job interview.

Virginia’s Career Planning System powered by KUDER also helps guide parents and students through a successful 8th grade transition and prepares students for a successful post-high school transition. Having an education and career plan in place can improve education and career satisfaction and success now and throughout your lifetime. KUDER also provides helpful parent information, such as “A Guide to Helping Your Children with the Career-Planning Process” by JoAnn Harris-Bowlsbey.

TAKE ACTION — Tell your counselor or teacher that you want to take the KUDER Assessments and begin your career planning portfolio today for the journey of a lifetime in education and career exploration.

KUDER helps you learn where you want to go and shows you how to get there!
