“I actually worked here as a junior,” says Tamar Roberts, a BMW-certified diagnostic technician at a dealership in Virginia Beach. “After school, I would work with a mentor. They were gearing me toward staying on after high school, and sent me to BMW training. After I graduated they wanted me to stay, and I felt really comfortable…I didn’t want a repetitive job. Here, my job is computer-oriented, and there’s something different
every day.” |

The movement of
cargo and people from place to place depends on
transportation workers. Firms in the trucking
and warehousing industry provide a link between
manufacturers and consumers. Railroads, airplanes
and ships transport both people and goods. Water
transportation, where competition for top jobs
is high, is the smallest in the transportation
sector.
Job
outlook
Job prospects for most transportation and distribution occupations should grow at an average rate as the population increases. Many of the jobs are cyclical with the health of the economy. Employment for railroad transportation is expected to decline, but many jobs will open up as people leave the industry or retire. Job growth for shipping and receiving is expected to grow at a slower than average rate because of technological advances and the increased use of automation at shipping centers.
