SPOTLIGHT ON CTE

““Being involved in [those] CTE courses in high school prepared me to teach CTE courses,” says Dawn Rountree.
Husband Nathan agrees. “Being a technology teacher, every bit of the knowledge I gained through my CTE courses is applicable to my career.”

- Dawn and Nathan Roundtree

As veteran teachers begin to retire and student enrollments rise, demand for teachers is expected to be strong to avoid shortages. In Virginia, there is an acute need for teachers skilled in math, science, special education and computer technology. While the job doesn’t command a huge salary, few professions have more impact on the development of children and young people.

Job outlook
Special education teachers have excellent job prospects with many school districts reporting shortages in this area. Districts also are seeking to diversify teaching staffs by hiring more males and teachers of color. Other people, including retirees from the military and other occupations, are also expected to round out the pool of new teacher applicants.
