SPOTLIGHT ON CTE

I was in SkillsUSA in high school. We did a lot of competitions, usually supervised by a local union. That opened up some opportunities for me; right before I graduated, I filled out an application and had a job waiting for me the week of graduation.”

— Matt Cahoon

For every new building that goes up, an army of workers has been employed in its construction. From the architect who designs the structure, to the carpenter who hammers in the final nail, the construction industry encompasses many skilled workers.

Job outlook
Job seekers in the construction industry, especially skilled laborers, should have an easy time finding a job as many workers are expected to retire. Construction jobs are expected to grow 11 percent by 2014. The number of architect jobs available is expected to increase as the population and the demand for both commercial and residential real estate grows. Jobs in both the construction and architecture industries are sensitive to cyclical changes in the economy, which may mean strong competition for jobs during a recession.
