"I would never want a desk job,” says Adam Darden, who decided to pursue agricultural studies in high school and now in college. Throughout high school he took classes on plants and soil chemistry and learned the practical skills of running a farm. “[My high school agricultural studies] were definitely useful. The classes help you learn the basic ‘book knowledge' of agriculture, and further your education. Everything you learn gives you a heads-up.”

Many workers are attracted to this career family because of the opportunity to work outdoors in a rural setting. From farm and forest workers to veterinarians, careers may require physically demanding work in all types of weather.
Job
outlook
Employment of landscaping, grounds¬keeping, nursery, greenhouse, and lawn service workers is expected to increase through 2014.
The number of farmers will continue to decline, but significant jobs will become available as current farmers retire or leave the industry.
Jobs for veterinarians are expected to increase between 7 to 19 percent between 2004 and 2014. The job outlook remains good for veterinarians, because job applicants are limited by the 28 selective vet schools in the country.
Developing fields in agriculture include ornamental horticulture, turf management, and natural resources management.
