Alexandria selected Earthlink Inc., an Atlanta-based Internet services provider, to build and operate a municipal high-speed wireless network for residents and businesses. Earthlink has similar Wi-Fi contracts in Philadelphia; Anaheim, Calif.; Milpitas, Calif.; and New Orleans. (PRNewwire)

Media General Inc., a Richmond-based communications company, joined other newspaper owners already involved in an alliance with Yahoo! Inc. to deliver classified job listings to online consumers. Members of the consortium include Cox Newspapers Inc., Hearst Communications Inc. and Scripps Howard Publishing Inc. The alliance includes more than 200 newspapers in 40 states. (PRNewwire)

NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton awarded a five-year, $200 million technical services contract to Swales Aerospace of Beltsville, Md. Swales has worked in a similar capacity at Langley since 2001. Langley expects to issue more than 40 task orders under the contract for engineering, design and analysis work. (PRNewwire)

The Mary Morton Parsons Foundation, a Richmond-based patron of cultural and community efforts, awarded the University of Virginia School of Nursing a $1 million matching grant for expansion and renovation of the school’s Clinical Simulation Learning Center. (News release)

Virginia announced plans to fund two major economic development efforts on the Eastern Shore. Accomack County received a $700,000 grant for infrastructure improvements at a planned research park on Wallops Island. The state also plans to invest $1.6 million to extend broadband capacity in the area. (News release)

The Virginia Port Authority signed a 10-year, $175 million contract with New World Alliance to receive containerized cargo shipments through the state terminal. New World, which includes the Mitsui, APL and Hyundai shipping lines, is VPA’s third largest customer.
