Jonathan F. “Johnny” Johnson, former owner of Richmond’s Community Pride supermarkets, won a $16 million jury verdict against Supervalu Inc. of Minnesota in Richmond Circuit Court. Johnson claimed Supervalu, the nation’s third-largest grocery supplier, forced him out of business in 2004 through its business practices and allegations against him. Supervalu is expected to appeal the decision. ( Richmond Times-Dispatch)

Welford R. Maxie, former president of Village Insurance Agency Inc., won a $158,000 judgment against Village Bank and Trust Financial Corp. Maxie claimed the company failed to pay money owed him through employment agreements and from the purchase of the former Chippenham Insurance Agency. No appeal is expected. United Steelworkers Local 8-675, representing workers at MeadWestvaco Corp.’s Covington paper mill, rejected the company’s third contract offer since last fall. Eighty-four percent of the 809 voting workers rejected the proposal, primarily because of health-care benefits. ( Richmond Times-Dispatch)
