SunRocket Inc., a Vienna-based Internet phone service provider, laid off 30 employees, about one-quarter of its work force in reaction to slowing subscriber growth. SunRocket is the second-largest provider of VOIP services behind Vonage but faces increasing competition from other telecommunications companies for market share. (The Washington Post)

Brenco Inc.
, a manufacturer of roller bearings for rail cars, laid off 40 production employees at its Petersburg plant, citing a downturn in North America for railroad cars. ( Richmond Times-Dispatch)

Capital One Financial Corp., a McLean-based financial services company, plans to lay off 1,000 workers by the end of 2008 in a move to bolster its competitive position in the financial services sector.
