Circuit City Stores Inc., a Richmond-based provider
of consumer electronic goods, announced plans to close
seven U.S. stores, 62 in Canada, and a distribution center
in Louisville, Kent. About 200 Canadian and 100 American
employees will be laid off in the move. The company also
announced Executive Vice President and Chief Merchandising
Officer Douglas T. Moore left the company and
that David L. Mathews would lead merchandising,
marketing and supply chain efforts. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)
Metro Machine Corp., a Norfolk shipyard operation,
will lead off 213 workers, possibly for longer than six
months. The move comes after a disagreement with the
Navy over the price for dry-docking the destroyer McFaul.
After completing work on two frigates, the company was
counting on the McFaul project to keep its employees
working. The company previously furloughed 70 workers
in January. (The Virginian-Pilot)
Pulaski Furniture Corp. will
close its curio cabinet plant in Pulaski, its last
domestic manufacturing plant, with the loss of 260
jobs. The company will continue warehousing, customer
service and other operations in Pulaski. Continued
pressures form Asian furniture manufacturers have led
to erosion in the company’s operations. (The
