AOL Inc., a Dulles-based Internet subscription service, is making online safety tools available to all computer users for free.  The AOL Safety and Security Center includes free anti-virus software, spyware, a firewall and phishing protection to prevent theft of personal data. (News release)

Tissues Technologies LLC of Richmond received approval from the Food and Drug Administration for its first product, a complex bandage with therapeutic capabilities, unlike a standard strip of gauze. The dressing is especially suited for treatment of bedsores. The company has a manufacturing deal for the bandage but is seeking a distributor. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)

The Virginia Bioinformatics Institute at Virginia Tech has developed a model for the study of metabolism and toxicity related to the drug AZT, used to treat patients with HIV/AIDS. Long-term use of AZT proves toxic for some patients and it is hoped the model may lead to a way to minimize or eliminate the side effects. (News release)
