March 2006

Virginia’s economic development efforts got off to a strong start in the first six weeks of 2006 with a wave of more than 1,100 new jobs announced for Southside and Southwest Virginia. Most notable is a new $105 million investment in Wythe County by Amcor PET Packaging, a Michigan-based plastic bottle supplier for the beverage industry. The move will bring 144 new jobs to the area.

In addition, these jobs have been announced for the following areas:

• 444 jobs in Danville as a result of plans by Telvista to expand its recently opened customer service center (250 jobs) and by Unarco Industries to open a shopping cart plant (194 jobs).

• 200 jobs in Orange County with the news that Diversified Information Technologies will open a customer support facility there.

• 175 jobs in Radford, where Intermet Corp., one of the world’s largest suppliers of cast-metal automotive components, will spend $14.3 million to expand its plant.

• 85 jobs in Mecklenburg County, the new home of American Industrial Heat Transfer, Inc., which is relocating its facilities for producing heat exchangers and heat exchanger products from Illinois.

• 50 jobs in Campbell County as soon as The Timken Co., a maker of highly engineered bearings and alloy steel, invests $10.27 million to expand its existing facility.

• 15 jobs in Suffolk, the result of Raytheon Co.’s recent announcement that it plans to open a high-tech facility in Bridgeway Commerce Park to provide computer modeling, simulation and imaging services for the U.S. and NATO military services.
