Alpha Natural Resources Inc. of Abingdon acquired eastern Kentucky mining interests Diamond May Coal Co., Progress Land Corp. and Kentucky May Coal Co Inc. from Progress Fuels Corp., a subsidiary of Raleigh, N.C.-based Progress Energy. Alpha paid $23 million and assumed $8 million in reclamation liabilities. (PRNewswire)

LandAmerica Financial Group Inc. of Richmond agreed to buy Capital Title Group Inc., a Scottsdale, Ariz., title insurance underwriter and settlement services provider for $251 million, of which 80 percent will be paid in cash and the remainder in LandAmerica stock. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)

Media General Inc., a Richmond-based media company that publishes Virginia Business, bought four television stations owned and operated by NBC Universal in a $600 million cash transaction. The stations are in Raleigh, N.C.; Columbus, Ohio; Birmingham, Ala.; and Providence, R.I. Media General intends to divest itself of current holdings of its CBS affiliates in Birmingham and Wichita, Kan. (PRNewswire)

Mercantile Bankshares Corp. of Baltimore bought Arlington-based James Monroe Bancorp Inc. in a $142.9 million stock and cash deal. James Monroe adds $530 million in total assets and expands Mercantile’s presence in the Northern Virginia and suburban Washington, D.C., markets. (PRNewswire)
