Capital One Financial Corp., a McLean-based provider of financial services, plans to lay off 1,400 call center workers over the next few months in an effort to make its operations more efficient. About 1,100 of the affected employees work in Tampa, Fla., 160 in Dallas, and 120 in Richmond. The layoffs represent about 8 percent of the company’s worldwide work force. Most of the work will be outsourced to U.S. companies. (7/22/04, Richmond Times-Dispatch)

Dan River Inc., a textile manufacturer headquartered in Danville, eliminated its third shift at the River Pointe Distribution Center with a loss of 30 employees. About half of those laid off were offered other positions with the company. (7/14/04, Danville Register & Bee)

Langley Research Center plans to cut supervisory positions by 20 percent as part of an agency-wide reorganization of NASA. A renewed emphasis on manned space exploration of Mars and the solar system is expected for the future. The new organization will take effect Oct. 3; job cuts may be achieved through buyouts or other options over time. (7/8/04, Richmond Times-Dispatch)

MCI, an Ashburn-based telecommunications company, plans to close its Chesapeake call center on Sept. 1, and lay off 400 employees. Increased computerization of call center operations were cited in the decision. (7/1/2004, The Virginian-Pilot)
