The Fairfax County Economic Development Authority opened offices in Bangalore, India, and Tel Aviv, Israel, to encourage expansion of technology companies in those companies to Fairfax County. The authority already has offices in London, Frankfurt and Tokyo. (8/18/04, Business Wire)

Trader Publishing Co., plans to expand its Norfolk-based division headquarters for electronic media. The $51 million investment includes construction of a new headquarters building in downtown Norfolk and 600 new jobs. Trader operates a classified advertising network through print and Internet services. It has a weekly circulation of 8 million through publications such as Auto Trader and Boat Trader, among several others. (8/16/04, Press release)

Coors Brewing Company, a Golden, Colo.-based beer producer and distributor, plans to build its third brewery in the United States at its Elkton bottling plant. The investment, estimated at upwards of $190 million, will add about 10 new jobs at the plant that employs 467. (8/10/04, Press release)

State Farm Insurance Cos. plans to add between 200 and 300 jobs to its Albemarle County operations center over the next two-and-a-half years as part of a consolidation of underwriting and general operations. The reorganization plan includes eliminating up to 500 jobs at the Frederick, Md., operations center, as well as closing 25 of 50 field claim offices in the Mid-Atlantic region. Morningstar Foods, a subsidiary of Dean Foods of Dallas, Texas, plans to invest $57 million in an expansion of its dairy processing operation in Rockingham County with 50 new jobs expected as a result. Virginia competed with California, Kentucky, Maryland, New York and Wisconsin for the project. (8/3/04, Press release)

Bay Electric, a Newport News construction and electrical contractor, opened a branch office in Charleston, S.C. The company has several projects underway in the area, including a $2.4 million renovation at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, Ga., and a $2.9 million construction project at Clemson University’s research center in Charleston. Columbia Flooring, a Danville manufacturer of hardwood and laminate flooring materials, announced plans to expand its Danville plant with a $13.5 million investment expected to create 200 jobs. (7/30/2004)
