John Kluge, a billionaire businessman and philanthropist, announced a matching $1 million gift to the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Brown vs. Board of Education Scholarship Program. The program was created by the General Assembly to provide educational opportunities to black Virginians whose public educations were closed between 1954 and 1964 in the effort to block integration of the state’s public school system. RS Information Systems, a McLean information technology company, won the second annual American Business Award for Best Support Team. The award was based on the work of the the company’s Quality Council, which earned the ISO 9001:200 certification at five RISS sites. Carter Ryley Thomas, a Richmond public relations firm, won a Gold SABRE Award from The Holmes Report, a leading PR industry publication, for its media relations work on the National Park Service’s First Flight Centennial Celebration. Trex Co., a manufacturer of composite decking materials headquartered in Winchester, was ranked number 50 on the list of 100 Best Corporate Citizens for 2004, compiled by Business Ethics magazine.
