Aviation Facilities Co., a McLean developer and manager of on-airport cargo facilities, was selected to develop Phase I of the Mississippi International Air Cargo Center at Jackson Municipal Airport. AFCO will finance, design, construct and manage the 60,000-square-foot, multi-tenant air cargo facility. (Press release)

Mantas, a Fairfax-based provider of analytical applications for the financial services industry, was chosen by Barclays Capital, investment banking division of Barclays Bank, to supply information systems to enhance Barclay Capital’s compliance monitoring capabilities in its core businesses of capital raising and risk management. Sperry Marine, a Charlottesville business unit of Los Angeles-based Northrop Grumman, won orders from the China Shipbuilding Corp. of Kaohsiung, Taiwan, to provide integrated bridge electronics systems for 12 new container ships. NSW, a manufacturer of extruded diamond mesh products headquartered in Roanoke, acquired the Vexar® plastic diamond mesh netting product line of Conwed Plastics of Minneapolis. Vexar® products such as bags and overwraps have long been used in the packaging by the food industry. (Press release)

Smithfield Foods, a Smithfield-based hog producer and pork processor, joined the logistics network of Nistevo Corp of Minneapolis. Nistevo’s transportation management network will allow Smithfield to connect the logistics operations from its ten independent business units for the first time. (Business Wire)

The Commonwealth of Virginia entered into an agreement with Maryland to establish the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport (MARS) at the Wallops Island Flight Facility to enhance aerospace industries in both states. MARS will assimilate the Virginia Space Flight Center and address the need for low-cost, rapid response solutions for small to medium-sized satellites, as well as flight experiments for government, academic and commercial uses. Virginia Commonwealth University received a $100,000 Fulbright grant to explore development of a MBA program in Cairo, Egypt, through a partnership with Helwan University Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration.
