Around the Old Dominion

Virginia's top industrialist

There’s hardly a corner of Northern Virginia that WEST*GROUP founder, president and CEO Gerald T. Halpin hasn’t touched. Since creating the real estate firm more than 40 years ago, Halpin has had a hand in developing more than 13 million square feet of business and residential space. Halpin was honored recently for his work by Gov. Mark Warner, receiving the Virginia Life Achievement in Industry 2003 award.

Halpin has had a prolific career. He’s launched other businesses — in 1976 Halpin founded McLean-based World Resources Company, an environmental risk-management and recycling firm. In 1992 he founded Aviation Facilities Company Inc., also in McLean, a leading developer of air-cargo facilities in the U.S. In 2001 he helped form Green Sea Venture Inc., which is working on a way to control carbon dioxide levels and reduce global warming.

Halpin’s real estate dealings extend far from Virginia. He has developed resorts and hotels in Scottsdale, Ariz., and Jackson, Wyo., and is now developing homes at a 2,000-acre ranch and wildlife preserve in Texas.
