General Dynamics, a multinational provider of services in aviation, information systems, shipbuilding and combat systems based in Falls Church, announced it will acquire Newport News Shipbuilding, a Newport News firm which designs and builds aircraft carriers and submarines for the U.S. Navy. The value of the deal is estimated at $2.6 billion, including assumption of $500 million in debt from Newport News Shipbuilding. (PR Newswire, 04/25/01)

AES Corp., an Arlington-based global energy-generation and -distribution company, has won a bid for approximately $45.9 million to purchase a 75 percent controlling interest in Kievoblenergo, the distribution company that serves the region that surrounds Kiev, the capital city of the Ukraine. Technet Computer Services Inc., based in Tysons Corner, and Networkland Inc., based in Arlington, have been acquired in a stock transaction by CBQ Inc., an e-business infrastructure company. Compass Technology Management, an e-business systems integrator and application provider based in Chesapeake, has completed a deal to acquire Computer Solution Company, a provider of computer-related services based in Midlothian. (VentureWire, 04/05/01)

SWVA Bancshares Inc., a Roanoke-based bank-holding company with five branches, has received shareholder approval to merge with Christiansburg-based FNB Corp., the holding company of First National Bank. FNB will have assets of $700 million after the May 1 merger. (The Roanoke Times, 04/05/01)

Performance Food Group, a Richmond food and food-related group marketer and distributor, announced that it has completed the acquisition of all the common stock of privately-owned Empire Seafood Holding Corp., a Miami-based distributor of seafood. Overman Associates, a Virginia Beach-based engineering firm, has been acquired by Finkbeiner, Pettis & Strout Inc., a regional engineering firm with offices throughout the Southeast and Midwest. Kaufman & Canoles P.C., a Norfolk law firm, has purchased the Chesapeake firm Robert D. Jones & Associates P.L.C. The acquisition adds three attorneys and three to four support staff, bringing Kaufman & Canoles' staff to 96 lawyers, 163 support staff and six offices in Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Newport News, Hampton and Williamsburg. Metrocall Inc. of Alexandria, a national wireless message firm, is merging with Dallas-based Weblink Wireless Inc. The new company will be named Weblink Wireless with corporate headquarters in Alexandria. Vastera, the leading provider of solutions for Global Trade Management has closed on its acquisition of Speedchain, a United Kingdom-based supply chain event management (SCEM) and global e-logistics solutions provider. Dominion of Richmond announced the completion of its purchase of Millstone Power Station, located in Millstone, Conn., from Northeast Utilities for $1.28 billion. Millstone Power Station includes two operating nuclear reactors. (Press release 03/31/01)

Williams, Mullen, Clark and Dobbins, a Richmond law firm, is merging with Wise & Marsac, a business and litigation law firm based in Michigan, formalizing a three-year affiliation between the two firms. Dominion Virginia Power, a subsidiary of Dominion, has acquired three power project entities from the Westmoreland Coal Company of Colorado Springs, Colo. for $25 million. XMLSolutions Corp., a McLean-based provider of business-to-business online exchange services, has entered into a definitive agreement for its acquisition by Vitria, a Sunnyvale, Calif.-based integration-services provider for $15 million in cash, debt payoff and liabilities. Tenaska Inc. has applied for a special-use permit to build a 900-megawatt natural gas-burning plant near Bremo Bluff in Buckingham County. The facility is planned to occupy a 670-acre site on the south side of the James River. The plant would employ between 25 and 30 workers, and represents a potential $300 million investment. Carlisle Motion Control, a Charlottesville-based manufacturer of products serving construction and general industry markets, plans to open a new $15 million friction material manufacturing facility in the town of South Hill. Harris-Tarkett Inc., a Johnson City, Tenn.-hardwood-flooring manufacturer, will purchase and operate the former Burruss facility in Brookneal. Zim Israel Navigation Co. Ltd., the world's ninth-largest shipping company, will be moving to Norfolk from New York. APACHE Medical Systems Inc., a McLean-based provider of data management and medical-coding applications, has signed an agreement with Cerner Corp. for the sale of substantially all of its assets and the assumption of certain liabilities relating to APACHE's clinical outcomes business. APACHE will receive approximately $3.6 million from the sale and intends to further pursue a strategy of developing one of the industry's leading technical infrastructures and clinical applications including medical coding. MicroStrategy Inc. ended a legal battle with shareholders who had accused the firm of fraud when U.S. District Court Judge T.S. Ellis approved a class action settlement that awards investors an I.O.U. due in five years, but with no cash up front. In addition to the I.O.U., the settlement awards shareholders interest payments on the note, $16.5 million in MicroStrategy stock, and warrants giving them the right to purchase 1.9 million MicroStrategy shares at a price of $40 per share. PSINet Inc., an Ashburn-based provider of retail and wholesale Internet services, announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, Metamor Holdings (France), has completed the sale of its entire ownership interest in Decan Groupe to Getronics International BV. Viasystems, a St. Louis-based provider of electronics manufacturing services, canceled a planned $30 million expansion at its Henrico County plant and will close the facility, a loss of 880 jobs. The company cited declining economic conditions for its decision. (Richmond Times-Dispatch, 04/25/01)

Lightningcast, an Alexandria-based technology developer for streaming media advertising services, has shut down two small sales offices in Dallas and Atlanta which were not performing to company expectations. Only three employees were affected by the closings. (VentureWire 04/04/01)

Barber Martin & Associates of Richmond laid off 17 of its 75 full-time employees due to uncertainty about Heilig-Meyers’ advertising plans. Barber Martin's largest client , Heilig-Meyers filed for bankruptcy protection in August and said its advertising plans were on hold after April 6. (The Richmond Times Dispatch 04/04/01)

Volvo will eliminated 300 employees on April 30 at the Volvo Trucks North America plant outside Dublin. The facility's peak employment was 3,225 in late 1999; it drops to 1,400 after the job reductions take effect. A decline in the trucking industry was cited for the layoffs. United Dominion Realty Trust, a Richmond-based real estate investment trust, is cutting about 200 positions -- 10 percent of its work force nationwide. Most of the jobs involved are site-level jobs at apartments. (The Richmond Times Dispatch 03/29/01)
