Minding Your Business
Cha-ching!

What do you do when you’re in college and you get a really great idea? If you’re Jermon Green, you take a semester off and go after it.

The 20-year-old Penn State business law student took a break from college to start his business, Vellians, a research and development company in Richmond. MYBVellians.jpg (8603 bytes)

His first project is an ATM/debit/credit card register for the express lane in fast-food restaurants. If Green’s idea becomes a reality, you’ll walk up to the express-lane register at a McDonald’s, swipe your card — just as you do in the grocery store — and punch in your order. Before you know it, your food will be served and you’ll be on your way.

Green figures business execs and customers will both like his idea because it makes fast-food service faster. He’s right: McDonald’s has already expressed interest.

As president and sole employee of the 6-month-old company, Green has patented his idea and is working on a prototype for the product. As if his plate isn’t full enough, Green has patented another idea: a compact cylinder that holds seven times the information, or 1.4 gigabytes, of a regular CD.

What’s in the future for the budding entrepreneur? First, Green plans to complete his last semester of college. Then, he hopes to develop a prepaid credit card system that offers low interest rates. With so many irons in the fire, this future grad is hoping potential investors will warm to his ideas.
