Norfolk gasoline retailer increases by 50 percent
The largest gasoline merchant in southeastern Virginia is expanding into the Richmond market. In two separate transactions, Norfolk-based Miller Oil Co. purchased 18 Shell stations in the Hampton Roads area and 15 gas station and convenience stores from the Chester-based Breez' In chain. The Breez' In acquisition included four stores in the Hopewell and Colonial Heights area, eight in the Richmond suburbs and three in Virginia Beach.
The price for the 33 stores came to more than $5 million. With the acquisitions Miller Oil owns 96 gas stations in Virginia.

Dominion Holdings Inc., a Roanoke holding company, purchased APS Direct, a Chicago-based direct-mail company, and Emerald Solutions In Print, a New Jersey-based forms and custom labels distributor for an undisclosed price.
F&M National Corp., a Winchester-based bank holding company, plans to purchase Security Bank Corp. of Manassas for $16.5 million.
First Coastal Bankshares Inc., the Virginia Beach-based parent of First Coastal Bank, is being acquired by Rocky Mount, N.C.-based Centura Banks Inc. for $117 million.
Pulaski Furniture Corp. plans to purchase Missouri-based Dawson Furniture Co. for an undisclosed amount.
Civic Development Group, a New Jersey-based telemarketing company, plans to open call centers in Martinsville and Harrisonburg. The company plans to invest $1.5 million in each center, which together will create up to 300 jobs.
ImageCom Inc., a manufacturer of videoconferencing products, opened in Reston. It's the first U.S. subsidiary of England's ImageCom.
LKM Industries, a Woburn, Mass.-based manufacturer of precision machinery, such as commercial chiller components and commuter rail equipment, plans to open a manufacturing plant in Alleghany County. The company will employ up to 125 people and invest $7 million.
MCI WorldCom, a global telecommunications company based in Jackson, Miss., plans to invest more than $10.5 million to open a customer call center in Chesapeake that will employ about 1,100.
Bristol Compressors Inc., a manufacturer of compressors used in air conditioners and heat pumps, plans to invest $20 million to expand its manufacturing plant in Washington County, creating 350 jobs.
Delta Dental Plan of Virginia, a Roanoke-based provider of dental insurance, plans to open an operations center in Roanoke, creating 35 jobs. The center is needed to meet growth due to new large, corporate clients.
Kraft Foods Inc., a Northfield, Ill.-based food subsidiary of Philip Morris, plans to expand its manufacturing facility in Winchester. It expects to add new products and 200 jobs.
Rancorn Wildman Architects Plc. of Newport News opened an office in Norfolk.
Sammons Commercial Printer, a Newport News printing company, remodeled its headquarters with a $250,000, 1,200-square-foot expansion.
Tarmac America Inc., a Norfolk supplier of building materials, plans to build a $7.2 million concrete products plant in Chesterfield County.

sportswear maker to
close plant, lay off workers
Tultex Corp., a Martinsville-based sportswear manufacturer that lost money during most of 1998, plans to close one of its sewing operations in Martinsville. The company also plans to cut 150 hourly positions in Martinsville. Tultex lost more than $22 million in the first three quarters of 1998, due largely to decreased sales.
