Virginia Business has prepared this special report in cooperation with Virginia's Center for Innovative Technology. It was inspired by a survey that the CIT commissioned to measure the economic impact the commonwealth's growing technology sector.

The first story of our special report zeros in on information technology and telecommunications (ITT) companies, which comprise more than 40 percent of Virginia's high-tech sector. Most of these firms are in Northern Virginia, but our second story highlights the rising stars in other regions of the Old Dominion. A third story traces the evolution of big-time ITT in Northern Virginia.
