Powhatan:
Smart business growth keeps Powhatan’s rural charm

We’ve found that small business likes living in Powhatan! Located just 20 minutes from Richmond and less than two hours from the nation’s capital, Powhatan offers businesses all the benefits and conveniences of, but a welcomed respite from, metropolitan areas.

As one of the fastest growing counties in the state, Powhatan strives to maintain its rural charm, while smartly planning for a balance of business and residential growth. Among the greatest attractions for both business and residents alike, are easy access to an excellent transportation network, outstanding schools (both public and private), no gross receipts tax and an extraordinary quality of life.

With the construction of new water and sewer lines on the eastern end of the County, Powhatan is seeing a surge of commercial growth along the Route 60 corridor. South Creek Industrial Park, only minutes from Richmond, is fronted with retail space, contiguous to more than 100 acres zoned light industrial. Among the current tenants are: Ferguson Enterprises, distributor of plumbing supplies and pipes, valves and fittings; Shade and Wise, brick distributor for residential and architectural masonry products; Metro Ready Mix, concrete; and Colony Construction Asphalt Plant.

There are a number of successful manufacturers in the County, ranging from a machine shop and fabrication service to a wood products operation.

Named as the sixth “healthiest County in Virginia,” by the Richmond Times-Dispatch this year, Powhatan is home to a number of recreational amenities, including its northern and southern borders of the James and Appomattox Rivers. It is home to a 4,462-acre Wildlife Management Area, and the future home of the Powhatan State Park on the Historic James River.

The historic Court House Village hosts a myriad of restored antebellum properties, including a tavern, clerk’s office and courthouse. An old jail houses a museum, operated by an active historical society. Along with many restorations and renovations, commercial activity has revitalized the village with the addition of three restaurants, a bed and breakfast inn, a number of arts-related shops, and a 55-year and older retirement community.
