Hampton

Strategically designed industry clusters have created growth for industries such as aerospace, sensors, modeling and simulation, homeland security and defense plus communications, health care and medical devices.

These clusters are driven by top-notch local assets which include NASA Langley, Langley Air Force Base, Hampton University, The Langley Full Scale Wind Tunnel and the National Institute of Aerospace, to name a few. Each cluster also benefits from a host of regional assets.

In addition to the top industry clusters, Hampton also has successful secondary clusters including software development, nanotechnology, architectural and engineering services, FIRE, automotive and related machinery and a solid manufacturing base.

Business parks
Part of the reason companies in Hampton are seeing success is due to the city’s state-of-the-art business parks. There are key business parks throughout the city each with digital switching offices, SONET and ATM technologies. Hampton Roads Center South Campus is enjoying success with the additions of Science Systems and Applications Inc., Lockheed Martin, Riverside Healthcare Ambulatory Surgery Center, and Hampton University’s $200 million Proton Beam Cancer Treatment Facility, which is one of only five in the U.S.

Work force
Hampton has an ample pool of highly educated and skilled labor. There are more than 17,000 military separatees entering the work force in Hampton Roads every year and the civilian labor force in the region exceeds 800,000. Hampton is also home to the Peninsula Workforce Development Center, which provides employer-driven work-force services and offers world-class training programs, state-of-the art facilities and a team of experienced professionals to meet training needs.
